Vitamin B6
Introduction
Vitamin B6 is a group of water-soluble compounds with vitamin B6 activity, including pyridoxine (pyridoxol), pyridoxal, and pyridoxamine, as well as their phosphorylated derivatives. Among these forms, pyridoxine hydrochloride is widely used as a stable commercial source of Vitamin B6 in animal feed and vitamin premixes.
Vitamin B6 functions primarily as a coenzyme in numerous enzymatic reactions, particularly those involved in amino acid and protein metabolism. It also contributes to carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, heme synthesis, neurotransmitter synthesis, and normal physiological development.
CAS
- 65-23-6 — Pyridoxine (Pyridoxol)
- 66-72-8 — Pyridoxal
- 85-87-0 — Pyridoxamine
- 58-56-0 — Pyridoxine Hydrochloride
Molecular Formula
C8H11NO3 — Pyridoxine
Structural Formula
Pyridoxine has the molecular structure C8H11NO3. Commercial animal-feed Vitamin B6 is commonly supplied as Pyridoxine Hydrochloride.
Physicochemical Properties
Pyridoxine is a white to almost white crystalline powder, generally odorless with a slightly bitter taste. It is readily soluble in water and slightly soluble or sparingly soluble in ethanol, while being practically insoluble in ether and chloroform.
Vitamin B6 is sensitive to light and heat. It is relatively stable under acidic conditions but can undergo degradation under alkaline conditions. Proper storage and handling are therefore important for maintaining product quality and vitamin activity.
Application
Vitamin B6 is an essential water-soluble vitamin widely used in poultry, swine, livestock, ruminant, and other animal nutrition applications. It acts as a coenzyme in numerous metabolic pathways and is particularly important for amino acid and protein metabolism.
Adequate Vitamin B6 supplementation helps:
- Support amino acid and protein metabolism
- Promote efficient nutrient and energy utilization
- Support normal carbohydrate and lipid metabolism
- Contribute to heme synthesis and red blood cell formation
- Support normal nervous system function and neurotransmitter synthesis
- Maintain healthy growth and development
- Support normal immune and physiological functions
- Contribute to reproductive performance
- Help prevent Vitamin B6 deficiency
- Maintain overall animal health and production performance
Vitamin B6 is therefore an important component of animal feed, vitamin premixes, compound feed, and nutritional supplements.
