Calcium Iodate
Introduction
Calcium Iodate is an important trace mineral feed additive and a stable source of dietary iodine for animal nutrition. Iodine is an essential trace element required for the synthesis of thyroid hormones, which regulate metabolism, growth, development, thermoregulation, and other important physiological processes.
Calcium Iodate is widely used in animal feed and mineral premixes as a source of iodine because of its good stability and suitability for feed formulations. Adequate iodine supplementation helps meet animals’ dietary iodine requirements and supports normal growth, metabolism, and reproductive function.
CAS
7789-80-2 — Calcium Iodate
Molecular Formula
Ca(IO₃)₂
Structural Formula
Ca(IO₃)₂
Physicochemical Properties
Calcium Iodate is a white crystalline solid or powder. It is slightly soluble in water and practically insoluble in ethanol.
Calcium Iodate has good stability under normal storage and feed-processing conditions compared with some other iodine sources. When exposed to sufficiently high temperatures, it can decompose and release iodine-containing vapors. The product should therefore be stored in a cool, dry, well-sealed environment and handled according to applicable safety and feed-quality requirements.
Application
Calcium Iodate is widely used as an iodine feed additive in poultry, swine, livestock, ruminant, and other animal nutrition applications.
Iodine is an essential component of the thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). These hormones play an important role in regulating metabolic activity, growth, development, and normal physiological function.
Adequate iodine supplementation helps:
- Provide a reliable source of dietary iodine
- Support thyroid hormone synthesis
- Maintain normal energy and metabolic regulation
- Support healthy growth and development
- Contribute to normal reproductive function
- Support normal physiological and metabolic processes
- Help prevent iodine deficiency
- Maintain overall animal health and production performance
Because of its stability and convenient application in feed formulations, Calcium Iodate is commonly incorporated into mineral premixes, vitamin-mineral premixes, compound feed, and nutritional supplements.
